Lousy Linen to Lovely Lady

This was a potato sack at it's finest. A simple boring black linen dress. It was screaming for me to help it! How could I pass it up?

I took it off and put this dress on inside out.
I had some tailor's chalk and marked my natural waist and the areas
where it was too big under my arms.

I took the dress in where it was too big, and cut off the excess.

Then, I took a piece of elastic and measured tightly around my waist, and sewed the ends together.
Not too tight. Just comfortable enough to be able wear all day.

I put the elastic around the waist of the dress. (The dress is inside out) I pinned the elastic along my natural waist chalk line. Keep the elastic nice and even.

I sewed the top and bottom of the elastic using a zig-zag stitch and stretching the elastic as I sewed.

I flipped the dress right side out, and It looks like this!

This dress needed a little extra flair, and I had some trim in my drawer of scraps. So, I sewed this black and silver sparkly trim to the neckline. It was a perfect addition to this little black dress.

This dress was ready for the first day of school meetings!

SO MUCH BETTER!

See you next time!

Graduation Gown not just for Graduates Anymore

This discarded, and loved-no-more graduation gown was calling to me from the thrift store rack. It was perfect for this time of year when teachers say goodbye tearfully to some, and not-so-tearfully to others.  But we love them all anyway.  Heeeeey!  Over here!  Buy me and give me a new life!! So I did. Sally liked the dress much better once I picked off those sleeves! She thought it was a perfect resting spot. I chopped the bottom a bit, folded it twice because it was fray-fray-central, and I hemmed it all up.  I could use the chopped off bottom piece as a belt  or use an existing one.  Choices.... The dress is all white so this time, I decided to go with a darker brown belt,  and some metallic sandals. Congrats and good luck  to all the 2015 graduates!  I'm ready for the ceremony! See you next time!

Red Romper Red Romper

My beautiful daughter took this picture of this less than beautiful dress. I thrifted it for a few dollars a long while back. I picked apart the skirt andplaced a pants pattern in its place. Picked off the sleeves and cuffs. Whole lotta sleeves! Extra fabric to make a sash belt. I found the center of the cuffs and pinned it for reference. You will see what I do with them! Bias tape around the sleeves and attached the cuffs. Check out the sleeves! Its actually the cuffs! I love my new romper! See you next time!

Dia de Los Muer-nksgiving!

Look at this awesome fabric! Check out the website where I bought it  HERE  It's just perfect for a Dia De Los Muertos dress! It's going to be perfect! I'm so glad I bought it in August, so I will have plenty of time to create and wear it before Halloween!  (Can you hear the sarcasm) .....time just slipped away.......  I was still going to make the fabric into dress, because I just loved it so!!!!   I decided to buy a pattern. A real pattern online!  A printable file that I had to put together, and decipher all by myself!  I put my mind to it and decided to go for it! I found one that I liked on www.burdastyle.com  You can check it out  HERE I originally wanted to make it with long sleeves,  but I didn't have enough fabric. Shorties will have to do! I kept putting it on and taking  it off to try to get the best fit. This was a long process. Too big in the shoulders, too long in the torso, and I had to veer away from the pattern
